engine advice

Postby tj93 » 28 Apr 2014, 15:53

hey guys me and my brother have a clinker project we picked up a couple of months back and havent really got around to doing anything on it, its come down to the point on getting the motor up and running which in its current state is a 202, the owner said it was running but we havent checked and done to much to run it now, problem is the oil is milky, we where told the boat was sitting for 2 years in his shed and someone mentioned to me could just be condensation but im not tending to agree.

We have also been tossing up the idea of a v8 but unsure if the boat will be able to take the torque as is and what motor would be a easy conversion and well suited?

The main question is if we stick with the 202 where around melbourne is a good place to send it to get a freshen up with some goodies added? some of you may say build it yourself and we most likely could but the problem is we want to get it up and running asap and potentially build up a motor later.

Any help is appreciated

How long is the boat less the cav plate on the rear.
How wide is the boat at its widest point
What size timbers are the engine bearers, - eg 4"x 2" or bigger
Do you know the builder

Ross

I'm guessing the one below. It looks a lot like STORMY (except around the transom), but a walkabout design. Maybe a later modification. I'm guessing 16'or so. Possibly an older Binx?

Taylor

STORMY runs a Y Block V8. Not one of the most powerful V8's around, but definitely one of the heaviest.

It looks like it would carry a v8
But if you want a classic boat you need a classic motor other wise its going to be another "hot-rodded" boat rather than a restored boat with period fittings and hop-up gear. The Holden six fits in just as well, with every thing still available and performance is still very good due to there light weight.
Its up to your taste as to what you do but any wooden boat on water still looks good !!

If you are planning to rebuild/hot up the current 202 but want to get the boat in the water asap, perhaps pick up a running 202, swap the marinising bits over and drop it in. I'm sure there'd be a 202 close to home that would get you going for long enough to rebuild the other one, and cheap. This guy is trying to give one away, doesn't say condition though?!
If you go with a V8 I think they generally run a 1 inch prop shaft, whereas a 6 cylinder is usually 7/8 inch, don't think this is a must though, see what others reckon?

I'll dob club member Alan Price in for a recommended engine builder for you, he lives in Toorak and is always happy to take your money so he can pay his butler, groundsman and driver, as well as support his kids exorbitant lifestyles. Good luck with it!! Jon.

Beat me to the punch Hooks!
Cannot speak more highly of Mrs Price.
A real knowledgable and exceptional engine man.
Send a pm and Ill give you his number.
Although he owns so many apple and telstra shares,
if you say the word "ALAN" to siri on the iphone
she will automatically connect you,
even if he is on his Learjet!

I was going to suggest Sir Alan as well but thought he may be far too busy building or tuning GTR, HO or SKIFF engines for his wealthy clients??
