Hi Guys,
I'd like to share a don't do.
I have spent probably over 5 months stripping my skiff bottom
back to bare timber in order to get that great transparent
color appearance.
I had performed heaps stain tests using the original rosewood stain
After countless hours of heatgunning then hand stripping repairing bleaching staining
then applying final coats sanding again and again etc etc.
I was very happy with the result.
Now the fatal error.
I turned the boat back over and it looked absolute crap.
Deck looks great, Hull looks great, but the don't match!
I did the hull restoration upside down close to the floor.
So i didn't see them together till I turned it over.
Five months of spare time lost. I cant live with the mismatch
I'm starting over.
Darren
I wont live with the result

Thats just terrible news Darren. I know how hard it is to find spare time let alone double that. Can you just strip the top few planks and blend it?
Re: A Don't Do
A real shame Darren, but good on you for not accepting what you are not happy with, even if it means virtually starting all over again. And further, thanks for putting it out there for all to be wary of.

Bad luck mate but i think that the boat is just fine and you have just worked out that the motor that you built for the skiff will scare the crap out of you and you have come up with another reason not to use the boat

I've cooled off for a day.
Dave,
I have considered darkening the staincoat on the top 3
planks and blending at the bow.
But I think the colors so far off I'll end up virtually
black to get close to a match.
Ive always disliked Rosewood even on the pianos!
Thanks Greg
And Skiffo its only a tiny 5 litre !

Darren, may be better to do a nice solid dark colour like it was, it was so dark before you could not tell it was stained.

Skiffo,
The CEO/Head Engineer of Price Racing Engines has just had a heart attack.
Rosco, that is the plan now although the stain color is moving to the dark red end.
and a serious mix with the 2 pac poly, paint it upright on stands and keel blocks.
Saw it again today it hasn't got one bit better!

Gee Darren - I know how much you have agonised over getting the stain and the finsih 100% right so the frustration at the mis-match is understandable. At least on the upside, Alan has a more time to build all that horsepower into your race motor!

Bob, did you say build them in? dam I've just been counting them to fall asleep, and that don't take much these days.
