Hi all, took Pagan to pykes creek after work today and..............................left with my tail between my legs AGAIN. I'm running out of ideas. Started instantly on the trailer, idle was smooth, picked the revs up beautifully and then, i put it in the water and it all turned to sh#t. Same problem as Yarrawonga, would take off like a scalded cat the stop. It sounds for all the world like fuel starvation but i'm keeping an open mind. Going to get the maggie checked out when i can find someone, the next job is to pull the fuel tank and check for a floating blockage, then will check the diafram in the fuel pump....clutching at straws really! Bloody disapointing, and just to add insult to injury the bilge pump decided to not work causing a bit of a rush at a crowded boat ramp. when the boat was back on it's trailer it worked a treat..go figure1

I think I would scare it into submission.

Put a can of petrol and a box of matches in the cockpit. Leave them there overnight, give it a good talking to then go to bed.
Come out in the morning, take it away to a water body and see if it has changed its mind.

It just might scare the bejesez out of it so that it co-operates with you.

Ray

This is probably just way too simple, but I have known three boats with a similar problem and all were fixed by either clearing or making a vent hole for the fuel tank, ie, stopping the vacuum.

I had a problem with one of my skiffs and I worked out the when I sat down on the seat to get going it crushed the fuel line and would stop. you get up to look and the dam thing would go get ready to go again go a few feet and it would stop. It drove me nuts until I worked it out

I generally shortern everything up. Think it's fuel,I would put a 5lt can with line closer to the engine. Eliminating tanks or lines. Sounds similar to Sundays problem with Nicks boat. Try shorterning wires up to bypass possible connection or load issues. Matt

The fuel tank barely holds fuel much less vaccum, all the fuel lines are visible and free from pinch points and i guess getting a fuel container somewhere closer would be problematic at best. One thing that interests me is the clear plastic style fuel filter gets lots of small bubbles in it, could that be a sign of a split diagphram in the fuel pump? When i had one of these filters on an outboard i used to own it would air lock and the thing wouldn't run, anyone else found that?

That sounds like its sucking air though the fuel line some where.
May even be a crack in a fitting or fuel pump.
most times when a pump diaphragm goes it leaks fuel in to the sump.

Ensure that you have a fuel pressure gauge fitted at the highest point of the system. This will show what is happening when the engine is running. When you know what happens it is easier to find the cause of your troubles. This also will allow you to know what occurs under normal use when all is running well.
There may be a non-return valve in the pump that could cause problems without showing any visible leaks.
Good luck.

You may need bigger fuel line Ray as carbs need high flow not pressure .
Have you had it out since ?

Nah Ross, hoping to have a play this weekend. Going to strap it to the trailer and run it under load to see if i can duplicate actual running conditions. Also going back to the original fuel setup even though it would flatten the battery getting the thing started. All the fuel lines are at least the same size as the fuel fittings on the carbs so i would guess they would be the limiting factor? I'm hoping for a quiet weekend so i can put some time into really looking at the problem. cheers mate
