Ford Y block starter.

I have the old style/original type starter motor for the engine in the project, Bazinga.

I would like to replace it with a modern starter motor but it would seem that no one knows what suits or where to get one.

Any leads or info would be appreciated

Why replace it Pete?
Mine has been never missed a beat and I don't have a clutch, meaning I'm always on the starter.

I am with Greg the new starters don't seem to last long I have got all the old type on all my boats and they work well. Dave had a high torque starter on Rude and it died in less that two years.

Replacing it because the long shaft of the bendix spring sticks through into the front cockpit area.

It will be either replace the starter motor or modify front bulkhead in the engine bay.
Either way is a pain.
The joys of putting an engine in a boat after all the wood work was done and finding measurements were out by about 1" to give the necessary clearances. There is plenty of room behind the engine though!
Much the same with the cooling water pump pulley it fouled on the front bulkhead and the engine hatch.

Peter, Contact Hi Torque Performance Products,390 pound rd Narre Warrren on 87905942, they will be able to overcome your problem with a good quality reduction drive starter. As you might appreciate, these blokes are machining and building their own components unlike the junk getting around eBay that everyone seems to go for. I have had one of their starters on my own ferguson tractor for over 20 years now and cannot fault it. On the other hand, as an auto electrician of 38 years the quality of these eBay and replacement units is more than questionable

I was checking the Summit Racing website from the USA and this starter motor, part number 3131N from TruPart came up on thier site as being suitable.

I found that I can get that starter from Eagle Spares in Dandenong

I think that I might take the starter out of the boat and visit both places and see what they have to say is most suitable.

Put power onto the starter motor whilst I had it out of the boat and it goes round. So that's a start on the electrical side of things!
