Hey Doc, not changing anything. It had a tacho that has been removed. Have a 4" hole in the dash that isnt period just ugly. Would like the gauges to work as well. The wiring was particularly bad, it may be period but its also a fire waiting to happen. I bought this to use.

Have a look at the tractor wreckers, as some of these early ones may run the cable.

hey Ross, would a tractor have a tacho? Talking to a vanguard guy off ebay and he seems to think he may have something period, smiths or vdo. Can't find anything that looks like it might have been a cable drive.

Hi Ray,
Does your vanguard engine run a generator?. Ford tractors run a generator with a mechanical tachometer drive on the rear housing. I am sure the drive system could be adapted to a shaft drive without using the generator if your engine is not using one. I am sure that there is a c40 t generator on the shelf in the workshop, shall verify tomorrow

Ray I saw on a vintage boat once a tacho and drve unit off a tiger moth.
My merling has an electric tach drive that runs off the cam.
It would be easy to adapt to the vanguard and it will look right
Ebay aircraft tacho. They used these drive units on everything. You might be lucky.
Just make sure you get the drive and matching aircraft tacho.

Ray I have a smiths chronometric on my hydro atomic. They had them on pommy cars and bikes.
You need a two to one angle drive. Again you have to mount it onto something that turns engine speed.
They repo it all but its probably about $500.

Ray try and take the wiring out as a loom and get a company called electraloom to repo it.
They make cloth wiring looms and are in vic
I bought one when I restored my 33ford and then one for my old harley. They looked just right.

Thanks guys for the responses, firstly, no go on the generator anlthough i'm guessing it wouldn't be hard to set one up. It does have a belt driving of the rear (front) pully for the water pump. Would you believe it has a crank handle starting system in case of emergency! I would hate to have to use it. Second, how does the aircraft setup drive from the cam? Will do a search and see what i can turn up.I will try to get some piccies of the engine bay, maybe might shed some light on the problem. Thats what makes this board worth it's wieght in gold, so many suggestions so many possible fixes! Hey Dave the wiring loom is pretty much non exsistant, just wires running eveywhere, would you believe they are stapled to various bits of timber, even wires that should be in pairs go off in different directions, looks like a five year old did it. cheers ray.
