if you want to keep it original and there is not currently a tacho drive to be used, to avoid possible reinventing the wheel, (and you don't like Bob's offer) find an old elec tacho you like and get one of these ( http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/150943673054 ... 1423.l2649)
One of the features of this style of system is you have to shield the wiring very well so this might help with the "tidy up" and the box is small enough to hide easily.
