3 woodies going to auction dec 6

Postby bootlegger » 09 Nov 2009, 11:27

I know two of these hulls and have done work on both of them. They are going to auction at Bonhams Goodman.
One is a Chris Craft Sportsman the other is the boat Scooter. I fitted a Honda Prelude engine to it married up to the original vintage gearbox. I Have the original Universal 4 cylinder engine here which goes with the hull. Dave

c1950 Wooden Speedboat
In the late 1940s through to the 1960s, the runabout, a fast planing boat with a flattish bottom and relatively lightweight construction was incredibly popular amongst the new prospering class of post-war revival. No where was this more so than in the USA where there were a multitude of companies led by the likes of Chris-Craft and the Hacker Boat Co applying new technology to the manufacture of wooden boats.

1961 Hammond Twin Cockpit Speedboat
Henry (Harry) Hammond built his first timber ski boat in 1945. During the war years Harry worked at Garden Island shipyards in Sydney Harbour and at the end of the hostilities turned to his passion of hand-crafting classic timber ski boats. Originally with his brother Jim (who later moved north to Ballina where he built fishing trawlers), Henry quickly established a considerable reputation as a fine builder of maple (and later, marine ply) ski boats. 1949 ChrisCraft "Sportsman" 22ft Runabout
Christopher Columbus Smith built his first boat in 1874 at the age of thirteen. It was not until 1924 that the name Chris-Craft first appeared and not until 1930 before the name was officially adopted replacing the previous Chris Smith and Sons Boat Company. Chris-Craft was based in Algonac, Michigan, though the company which is still in existence today is now based in Florida.

Yeah I know its Miss Sue. I think the reserve is around $30000. My guess is it will stop at around $12000 if it even gets a bid at all.

Nick
I can remember an Alpine parked up on blocks in 1980 because it was worth money back then. It belonged to my mates cousin who was into ralley in Ireland. I used to see it in a farm shed every night for a few weeks while we tryed to repair an old car we rolled in amateur event.
Frank could fill you in on the value I think.

Jeff
