50's, 60's runabout identification

Postby Dodger71 » 27 Feb 2011, 19:06

I am trying to identify my fathers ski boat he built in the 60's. Two reasons, 1. To try and find if it still exits through registers or local knowledge in the hope of tracking it down and 2. To find the design and origin as to get my hands on the design plans as I would like to rebuild it and share it with my family as I experienced in the 70's. Info I know:
1. Hull built by a boat builder in Preston Melb, Dad fitted out the rest.
2. Was named Shifty and used mainly on Lake Eildon Vic during the 60's and 70's
3. Boats in the ski group over those years were, Cougar, Iluka, Yandy and Akuna.

Any info would be appreciated, photos added to help in identification

Thanks in advance Mark.

G'day Mark

Boat builders Jack Eddy and Keith Simpkin operated around the Coburg - Preston areas in the 50's/60's, but the hull shape does not look like either of their styles.

I doubt that it would be any plans of the boat. Most of these hulls were built out of the builders head.

G'day Mark
I hope you find it one day. My boat was home made in Mount Gambier and the look on the builders face when he saw it restored after 42 was priceless. The bonus was he still had the plans so he gave them to me. At first glance "Shifty" could be mistaken with TT's.
Cheers Chris

Hi Mark
I have a great photo of the builder in my boat on the Valley lake at Mount Gambier and not even a wire brush could have removed the smile. I did manage to take a photo of a photo when it was brand new behind his holden. Peter said that the 168 in the boat was newer and better than the one car. He told me that he used to take nurses around the lake before he met his wife. Love must be strong as Viteau was sold to pay for his wedding. Greg did put some photos in one of the hollow log editions but I haven't written anything for the web site. You mentioned that you Dad went boating with other families would any of them know anything?
Cheers Chris

Its a long time coming but we might have an answer to this one? Same boat?, certainly looks like the same builder. The knowledgeable Ron Meehan suggests built in Preston in the very early 60's. possibly by either ? Aitken or ? Turner who later joined forces in a Reservoir factory.

Hull shapes are very similar. Obvious difference is the twin cockpit to walkabout layout style, which could have been done later. A few other differences (windscreen, spray fins, etc), again all of which could have been changed later.

trailer is also a giveaway ...we spent some time comparing and almost everything matched perfectly and the bits that didn't you could tell were modified at a later date
