holden six/ ford altenator

Postby rayza1 » 23 Aug 2010, 19:19

Hi guys, was wondering what alternators people are running on there holden red 6's. I'm trying to use a ford one at the moment because it has an inbuilt reg and when fitted is pretty tight to the side of the motor. Does it make any difference that it runs backwards ? I was told it wouldn't. Only problem is it's not producing any power. Had an electical genius working on it today with no result, (tried a second one with same result) Hope someone can help. cheers.

Hi Brian, the wiring is all new, as far as i know the alternator is ok. It's had new brushes fitted and the slip rings seem ok, we have tried two regulators and checked the wiring system and all seems ok. The ignition light was an LED but we swaped that for an incadecant globe but nothing we've done has made any difference. It's got me stuffed.!!

Ray,
I remember the last one I fitted to a six with a V belt drive from the prop drive hub on the timing case. The pulley on the engine was the same size as the alt, and the only way I got it to work was to run the engine well over 2500rpm to get it excited (and the neighbors). The norm ratio is 3:1 so the light will go out at idle.

Hi Brian, yeah was waiting for that one. Didn't you know holden made a yellow motor (or a least they should have). Boat is going in the water this weekend for the first time. Dont have the deck on yet but need to know if the balance is right before i do all the fancy stuff, if it sits in the water and doesn't do anything stupid the lid goes on. Just hope it doesnt sink!!!! What alternator are you running on your red motor? Will let you guys know how the shakedown trials go. Cheers mate.

hey ray, ive got a good mate who paints alll his holden engines yellow because thes ones he painted red turned out to be lemons, go figure that one out. haha

on mine i just run the standard red 161 alternator. i havnt touched it apart from taking it off the old engine and putting it on the new one that you have seen.

i tested mine in the same way you are about to, no deck, sitting on a milk crate. it felt like it was flying but it was fun.

ive had more enjoyment out of my bond wood with the 6 then any other boat ive owned n im sure you will find the same. get some more pics up and give a us a gander at the progress.
