Goldsbrough

Postby Johno » 21 Jun 2010, 11:17

Hi my name is John
I met some of you at Narrandera last year (with Missbhavin) .
I had a look at a boat on the weekend and was wondering if i could get some help with it.
Has anybody herd of a Goldsbrough
It has some cracked ribs are they hard to fix or expensive to get fixed
The boat is in good Nick beside the ribs it has a mid mount 292, OK trailer, everything works (gages ect)
Just wondering if some one could give me a ball park figure on what it would be worth.
I would hate to see it go to ruins
Ta John
PS Missbhavin is coming along i am in the process of rebuilding the engine after finding water (rust) in the cylinders
Mite try to get it ready for Narrandera

Hey John,
I'm pretty sure one of our members Andrew Petty has a Goldsbrough called Sheba 2. Hopefully he will cast his eye over this post sometime soon and fill you in. (If I'm right...)

Cheers!

Looks to be a pretty nice hull. Those crack ribs would be that big a deal to replace but I have no idea what somebody would charge to replace them. I have no idea what values are at the moment. If you got it for a few grand it would probably work out OK. You can call if you like Dave 0413766501

Hi John,
Ron Johnson is near Nowra and does boat building and repairs. He did Ol Skool & Friski that were at Narrandera. Greg would have his number if wanted to give him a call.

G'day John

Great looking boat. There are still quite a few Goldsbroughs about, including Sheba II.

For the likes of a Ron Johnson, I think the hardest thing about replacing the ribs would be the engine coming out and going back in (interesting how Y blocks seem to have that effect on ribs - busting them, that is).

To replace the ribs is not a difficult job. The hardest part will be getting new ribs in where the old ones are under the deck because originally they would have been installed before the deckbeams and decking was installed.
From the photos it looks as though the outside of the boat may have been glassed or at best painted. In that case the replacement of the ribs is going to be a bit more of a problem as punching the nails out will leave a lot of holes in the glass or at best damage the paint on the outside meaning a new paint job for the hull.

The use of green spotted gum then steamed to allow bending is best for ribs. The greatest hassle there is borrowing or making a steam box to allow the timber to be steamed enough to get the bend into it for fitting inside the hull. Hope that that made sense.

any other questions dont hesitate to ask
cheers

There is another option that I used to see a bit on the clinker race boats and that is to leave the busted rib in place but put in a new rib between the busted ribs. It's not pretty but it is functional and solves some of the problems outlined above. I guess it comes back to effort for reward versus appearance. Good luck and keep us updated.
