Stains and varnish

Hi all,

I have now reached another stage in resurrecting my boat. The hull is complete and I have started fitting a new deck (marine ply). I want to stain the ply then varnish. My questions for the brains trust are:

1. Water or oil based stain?;
2. Epoxy seal before varnish?;
3. Recommended varnish?

Also should I seal the underside of the deck and edges with epoxy?

A couple of progress shots attached.

Regards,
David White

For what my opinion is worth and that may not be much. I use the Feast & Watson stains and Bondall clear, although on Ronda i'm using Feast &Watson clear as well. I haven't bothered with doing much underdeck, again Ronda (Lewis Bro) doesnt have any treatment underneath. What are you restoring...it looks great

Thanks for the feedback Rayza, looks like a trip to Bunnings when it is safe to go out.

The boat doesn't have any makers marks on it and by the number of holes in the main stringers it has been modified at least once. I bought it off a chap on ebay. It had quite a bit of rot in the hull and the deck had been fibreglassed. The motor came out of a 1973 Ford Fairlane, it's rear mounted driving through a vee drive - I'm not confident this is the original configuration.

Cheers

If you have a look at my post below titled Torquewood, I used Bondall monocell gold from Bunnings, the sides are premixed stain/varnish. The colour is Jarrah, I just kept applying coats until I was happy with the colour. Once that was achieved, copious amounts of clear were applied and are still being applied. Good luck!

David I use Norglass 2 pack clear .I have used it on all my restos and find it well worth the extra cost . Brush on two coats wet rub out brush marks and finish with a spray on coat .
