removing old varnish

Postby rayza1 » 05 Dec 2017, 19:32

Hi all, my recent purchase Ronda has a bad case of flaking varnish. Most of the clear has fallen off but what is left still seems to be stuck on quite well. The original paintwork and name are in near perfect condition with only small areas around the gunnels having chipped off. My question is, how do i go about removing the flaking clear WITHOUT damaging the original paint and name underneath? I had a play with a heat gun last night and that seems to work but will be painfully slow, i'm scared to use sanding as it may damage the original paint. Any suggestions?

I wet rubbed the hull of lnvader Ray and rubbed the hull and rubbed the old rego out and fethered the few chips out and re touched the flakes with morter colour and varnish mix and the one coat of clear over the hull .
That way you can see how deep you are going. I didn't try and toutch up thr sign writing just lite rub and clear over.
