I think the grooves would be for oil retention. I've seen it done before by manufacturers (Holden) then discontinued. Successful or not I don't know.
If the lifter is bled down with no oil in it you should be able to compress the spring. You may have difficulty doing it by finger only though.
Going straight cut gears is a mistake in my opinion. Helical gears have more contact strength at any one time. Going straight cut only eliminates thrust issues and creates more noise. A good steel helical gear would be fine.
Ok its a solid cam, this has more reasoning with regard to running clearances as hydraulic is zero valve clearance. All this affects is relative valve timing events at the valve. I've had cams ground by wade for various engines and apart from expecting serious valve temperatures over normal if I really really flogged it, I've never had to run their recommended clearances under normal operation. The noise drives me mad plus I've never found any performance issues running standard clearances. If you were out and out racing then do it. Hydraulics adjust for any extra expansion of the valve stem anyway (to a limit). Pump up will be your problem if you are venturing into the high rpm bracket. Does the engine have adjustable rockers?? If you worried just run the specified clearances by Waggott, the lifters will pump up anyway and turn solid.
I found some info on those campers a while back. Seems Matilda campers went out of business after a few rental 90's Hilux's with them on the back fell over. I think one was a fatality. Weight and over loading the vehicle was the prob. Dreadfully unstable over 80kms. Mind you if you ever saw one you'd see why. Do you know what weight yours is? I'd like to keep mine under the 500kg mark. Just tested my ute and 950kg, passenger and dog, puts it on the blocks. 1298 allowable payload but things add up quick to bring it down i.e. tray, towbar, wife, etc. Some things you can go without.

Thanks fot the info - I will go with the helical gear option
Re Camper - I haven't weighed mine as yet but the bloke I bought it off reckoned 600kg loaded
Ive made mine to fit with the tray removed - the chassis rails line up so its a neat fit.I will try and download some photos or might be more appropriate to pm me yr mobile and I will txt pics - its a bit off topic here!

Pm'd my number and a link on the article about the campers.

I wouldn't worry about off topic stuff. It's not as if the bulletin board is being overwhelmed with posts. ;)

Hi Will,
How far off completion are you? We might have to arrange a day in the water when you're ready.

Yes Bob -- still a long way off - partly your fault! Ive been machining up a Hardin style thermostat housing to moderate the raw water ( one of your suggestions) also built a new dry sump pump which is camshaft driven using the internals of a Ford 351 Windsor oil pump
A question tho- I will be running triple SU carbs and is it worthwhile setting up the chokes? I can do it but on the race cars we never bothered with chokes because there was plenty of opportunity for warm up - boats seem a different proposition?
cheers

Damn, I get blamed for everything 'round here. First by Chivs for too many posts, then by you 'cause I conned you into going with a thermostat housing.
Where's the little smiley face button thingy ???
Chivs, all good, still playing around. About to pluck the motor out of the boat to fix an annoying little oil leak.
Will, can't say I've ever seen a boat with chokes. Bit hard to manipulate the choke on a direct drive. Great to hear that you are progressing anyway.

Windage tray in sump, - blocked oil return holes in cam chest and external return lines to dry sump pick up
2 do list -
fit engine to bearers - new brackets etc

Looks like a very workable Dry Sump System. Make sure the Tank has adequate internal volume and correct baffles to allow all the air to separate from the oil. Many Tanks were made to small creating foaming of the oil.
