Timber treatment

Postby WoodRay » 04 Jan 2017, 08:42

Anyone used copper naphthenate to treat timber after removing the rot? Looking for pro's and cons on this one.

I've used it for fencing and odd jobs around the yard, but never on a boat.
The can of copper naphthenate I have is oil-based too so it wouldn't be compatible with epoxy or glue. I tend to see it more as a termite barrier rather than a treatment for rot. But happy to stand corrected on that.

2 pac epoxy based wood preserver's still have my vote

Wattyl Industrial is the brand I use, but mainly because that's what my local marina stocked. It's mixed at a 50/50 ratio. I've been happy with it but do avoid the fumes! Be sure to get compatible thinners with whatever product too.

A shipwright taught me to mix the two parts as instructed, and then dilute with thinners at about a 20%(preserver) / 80%(thinners) ratio. Then literally pour it over the problem area so it wicks deep down into the timber. Before it tacks off repeat again with only 50% thinners. Then brush on final coats minus thinners - basically until it won't absorb a drop more. Seems to work!
