Lewis Bros 14 1/2 ft outboard

Postby terian » 15 Feb 2014, 16:36

Hi guy's.
I would like to share my project with you and hopefully learn more than I currently do about the boat and how to finish it.

I finally got the boat from my Dad about 16 years ago and shortly after I started stripping it back he passed away. So most of the knowledge he had left with him. He bought it in the mid 60's (I have a receipt here somewhere) and used it for bare foot skiing on the Port River (salt water) here in Adelaide.

Here I am with my parents in early 1970

My dad stopped skiing in the early 70's and the boat spent the next 20 years as a fishing boat mostly in the gulf and some river use during holidays.

When dad first bought the boat it ran a 140hp Mercury and then in the mid 70's an 85hp Mercury.

While Dad was sick I stripped the outside of the hull and then dropped it to a local place (Duck Flat Wooden Boats) where they put a Boat cote epoxy coating on it. I was hoping for his assistance when the time came to redo the inside but he didn't get to stick around that long.

I'll let the pics do most of the talking..

I would be greatfull for any comments or assistance in identifying this boat and suggestions on renovating the inside and deck.

Regards,
Sean.

Welcme sean. The guy to talk to is ron hodge (lewsi info). He worked for lewis boats back then.
He is probaly the only one that might help. You do have the full history seeing your dad owned it for so long.
Did duck flats glass over the hull?
It used to be their method for fixing everything.
Good luck with the project. Its extra special when its a family heir loom.

Thanks bootlegger.

Have sent PM to Ron.

I sought and accepted Duck Flat's advice on the best way to preserve the exterior of the hull (in 1997 to glass). It isn't a decision I've always been comfortable with and am happy to accept any advice/criticism moving forward (I'm not easily offended guys and always happy to listen).

Hi terian, Its good to see another of these boats has survived . Very few of these boats were built as outboards. Do you intend to restore the boat yourself or get it done ? I suggest to contact me rhodge54@bigpond .com or 0409441112 Regards Lewisinfo.

Huge thanks to Ron for spending some time this morning shedding some light on my boat. It was certainly the extra motivation I needed to take the next steps forward.

Just had to get a few things out of storage and these show a bit more of what the original boat looked like.

Hi screwit, thanks. Yeah, the boat doesn't get worked on in this shed. I was in your area racing my car over the last long weekend.
