setting up my outboard

Postby rayza1 » 23 Sep 2013, 20:21

Hi Guys, i'm having trouble sorting out a foot throttle setup for my little Hydro. The outboard is an old 18 hp johnson that was originally a tiller steer and has been stipped of pretty much eveything from that setup. I'm finding the remaining mechanism extremely stiff and difficult to move. I understand that I need to run a flexible outer cable from the boat to the motor but this just seems to add more bends and subsequent drag on the inner cable. The other problem is the throttle works back the front, meaning i have to pull from the back of the motor so i have been trying to run the cable around the back....more bends!. I need to see how other people have solved the problem. cheers Ray

Ray . No easy fix , usually custom fabrication. Text me a couple of photos.

Foot throttle on a kneel down hydro , can't wait to see how you handle that.

Ray

Cats out of the bag now !

If you use a standard accelerator cable , outer cable fixed at both ends, then the amount of bends shouldn't compromise operation , shouldn't make any difference whether front or back of engine. Make a bracket near carby to hold outer part of cable.
If that fails ask Alan to have a look when he drops off my 2 hydros to you for storage ?????

2 Hydro's, ok i'll bite. I've tried most of the things you've sugested, the problem is the advance setup on the flywheel is really stiff as well. Combined with the cable situation it is almost impossible to setup something strong enough and to get enough leverage to move the throttle at the motor

Has anyone tried using hydraulics to operate a throttle? Are there any pitfalls. Could use a master and slave cylinder to the job with a bloody big return spring

Well, just got back from the shed. I now have a working hydraulic throttle (at least a mark 1 version). So far so good, was fairly easy to set up, just had to find a slave cylinder with a long enough throw. I'm using a trailer master cylinder but may have to find something that pumps a bit more volume as it takes a couple of pumps to get full throttle (would much prefer one push) Fabricated all brackets out of aluminium. The hose is hard plastic 1/4" tube with simple push in fittings. Wiil try to put up some pics when my stupid phone will take some that aren't crap. cheers Ray

Ray, try trailer master cyl made for 4 wheel disc, they have a bigger bore (can't remember size)to move more volume.

Hey Alan, you were right on the money with the bigger master cylinder, using a 7/8" as opposed to the 3/4" and get full travel on each application. Really happy with the way this works...so uncomplicated yet has good feel and seems precise. I can see other applications for this!! Still cant get a decent piccie to put up. Maybe tomorrow! Ray

Early falcon/ holden clutch master cyl have 1' bore and mount the same as trailer.
