paint removal

All right I give in ! Whats the best way to get old paint off and make less mess my shed looks like a dust bomb has gone off!!! theres bloody dust on every thing and you seem to be cleaning more than building any Tips? Cheers

G'day tommo,
On advice from fellow forum members,I have removed the paint and varnish from the late Classique with a heat gun and 25mm wide scraper,once you get the technique sorted it seems to quite effective(to me as a novice). Just a shame I stripped all the hull to find out it is not worth fixing!!!!!!!!!

For stripping the paint off the inside of my clinker I used a paint stripper called "Coopers"
It comes in a kit with the stripper and neutraliser and various grades of steel wool and a brass bristle brush. The stripper asnd the neutraliser are applied using a squirter bottle.!!!! Not complete mess free but a lot less mess than sanding and the gell and normal strippers. also a lot less hazardous to the skin and the smell is nowhere near as bad as normal Methylene Chloride paint strippers.

There are also videos of the use of the stripper.
I was impressed with the videos and even more impressed when i purchased a small kit to try it out.
I then purchased a 5 litre kit to complete the job and had some left over from doing the complete interior of a 16' clinker boat.

Thanks Pete, The kids are in Melb but I am in the scrub,There is plenty of infomation on that web page to be able to manage different technics and alot less dust for sure ,not cheep that coopers though Peter, looks about$35_45 a mtr striped just depends on the kit size but it looks like it brings it back to brand new.

Hi Ray,
I might have worded my first post in a misleading way. The hull on Classic Leak needs resheeting,she has had to many previous bodgy repairs to just fit a patch to it. The repair job has turned into a rebuild like many others seem to do.I don't think there will be much original boat left at the end of project but hope to have a bond wood boat that doesn't leak as much.
Rather than hijack tommos thread ,maybe I will start one on the rebirth of Classique

Thommo. Heat gun and a good quality pull scraper. I think sandvick and bahco are the brands to look for. Less chance of digging into the wood pulling rather than pushing a scraper.

Brought the heat gun and pull scraper to day for the out side and maybe give the stripper s go on the inside .thanks Guys will keep you informed did some roving today o what fun cheers tommo

On that old twenties launch i replaced every nail and rove. Over a thousand of them.
It took a couple of months of saturdays.
The pull scraper works unreal and no mess from stripper.
If you do use stripper dont forget to nuetralise it with water after you are done as if you dont later it will bugger up the paint
