I went looking for steering cable pulleys today. Didn't find any that we're suitable. The originals are bakelite and have a lot of chunks out of the edges where the cable runs.

The boat originally had stainless steel ire for the steering cable. One boat place said that stainless was wrong and that it should be plastic coated gal wire.
So now I'm confused. Which should I use?

Easy one Peter - plastic covered wire is for the washing line... SS cable is for boats. Pay the extra bit and be safe for you, your family and other boaters.

I thought that the original fit out for the steering was correct but I was being advised otherwise from one boat shop so I thought that I would ask the learned members here.

After I find the sheaves that I need I will get the wire to match.
Think that I will fit the mounting plates and put the sheaves in at a later date.

I've just replaced the steering cables as part of a restoration project. I had the same questions about which type of cable to use. The plastic coated galv stuff only came in an ugly blue colour, so I used that where it can't be seen. I've used SS on the exterior bits that can bee seen.

I haven't used it in the water yet, as the boat still has a long way to go.....but i do notice that the SS cable is noisy rattling and squeaking and clunking on the moving aprts, whereas the plastic coated stuff is nice and quiet.
However, I guess it wont be noticable when Im in the water, with a 308 purring away behind me !

The trouble with the plastic coated cables is the plastic discolours and you cant see the cable corroding inside. Stainless cable all the way for safety even if there is a little noise. Broken cables and speedboats dont mix
