keel repair

Hi, I need to replace about 400 mm of keel running up to the bow on a ply clinker of unknown origin. Any ideas what type of timber the keel would be made of ? Will i be able to scarfe in the new section of keel?

Ray I would make this in hardwood as the planks are nailed or screwed to it .
Softwood does not hold nails or screws as well and the bow does get some pulling on the trailer.

Hey Ross, any particular timber? Would something like Meranti do or something harder like redgum?

The Everingham that I picked up before Christmas has the same issue with the keel damaged/split where the skeg bolted thru. I am guessing that the keel is spotted gum, planking is meranti! Don't know how one would scarf in as the keel has a lot of oil soaked into it for it to glue and it is the backbone. Guessing that this is one of the reasons in my case that the previous owner bailed out on this hull!

Probably find that the keel is Redgum.
If you are going to replace it with redgum dont use a sleeper get some properly seasoned redgum.

I would think that it is best to take the stem back to the stop water/scarf where the stem is bolted through the keel. Bit hard to describe.

Ray, I would use kiln dried vic ash for what you have to do, and you can buy it at a hardware about 200mm wide but may not be thiker then 45mm [They use it for stairs and beams]. If this is not thick enough, you can lamanate thiner pices together, if you do this stager the overlaps heapsand you can get it the size you need to get the shape and the length you need to do it in one piece.
You can get away with out any fancy cuts this way and it will be strong after you cut it to shape.
But use a water proof glue.
