OK I knew Al would come into this conversation with his extensive knowledge of the holden 6 so friction doesnt come in to it really. It's more to do with lift in the valve to achieve more power and that is done by the fact a roller rocker is stronger for bigger springs etc.

I know I am stating the obvious but lift is determined by cam profile and rocker ratio. As far as strength goes I had one chev motor that used to destroy roller rockers but was fine with original rockers but maybe it was the fault of the installer - me !!

Alan is correct. The strength of a roller rocker as opposed to a standard rocker is significant to say the least. So I guess overall its about handling the stresses at higher revs and spring loads and reduced wear and friction.

Guys,
apart from the obvious (old age) the only time I have seen rollers fail repeatedly on the same engine was because the geometry was not checked. Once the correct geometry was set (push rod length) no more problems. There is a simple gauge available (http://www.jegs.com/i/Proform/778/66790/10002/-1) that makes it easy, some time when these old V8's get machined a few times nothing fits any more.

my problems were eventually sourced to OEM pushrods that were bending - replaced by lightweight but heavy duty titanium units and pinning the rocker posts to the head as they were prone to being pulled out with the much heavier valve springs. We also used push rod guides to minimise sideways movement. The lessons learned with the chevvies were applied to my red motor sprint car and I never had an engine failure.

Let's go right back to basic's fella's. If you have a Holden 202 with standard cam and standard rockers, and another Holden 202 with standard cam and roller rockers. And both are absolutely identical in compression, tolerances etc.
Which one will be have the most power on the dyno test.

Jeff,
If both are identical or you just changed from one to the other, then the friction would be the largest difference so theoretically rollers would make a larger power output. The only problem is measuring such a small amount.

Speaking of small measurements.
I asked a wise grease monkey how do you get more horsepower
from a Grey Motor........ he said "Fit a Red Motor"
The same guy just painted my Black Small Block Orange.
The question is, will it make more HP!!!!

I just want to say thanks to all contributors for comprehensively answering my question re roller rockers.

Cheers
