Info wanted

Postby Greg » 05 Jul 2012, 05:26

Paul contacted me for info on this boat. I am posting this on his behalf
Greg

A mate of mine has just got a hold of Gelignite Jack Murray's vintage Ski boat .

According to sources I found online Jack Murray and Alf Nazar started Water Skiing in Australia,
we think the boat is from about 1957, there is a photo of it at the state library website.

Though it is in need of major repair and restoration it is still very complete ,
has a Ford 272 or 292 Y Block engine, copper pipe exhausts
that look original to the boat, seats are there in surprisingly good condition,
steering wheel non original but it still has the original cast alloy geared boss set up,
gauges and a lot of hand made hardware, accel pedal etc...fuel tank there, even
the original wooden paddle.

The front deck and engine cover is missing and upper port section of the bow,
most of the floor is ok as spilt oil has preserved it, some rot on the horizontal surfaces
as you would expect from years outdoors.

We have the list of owners since Jack Murray sold it and it has been in the Southern Highlands
of NSW all that time, powerboat races were held on Lake Bathurst near Goulburn in the
1950's , Jack Murray raced there way back then.

We are looking for old photos to tie it all together, the boat will be for sale.

Thanks Paul

Paul if you can get the block and head casting numbers off the engine we'll be able to tell you what she's got under the hood. You're lucky to have the history that you already have, good luck filling in the missing pieces and sourcing some photos, Jon.

Photo from the State Library - looks very much like a Hammond to me - the water line seems to give it away but I am happy to be corrected
