Does Falcon 170 go into a Falcon 250

Postby Tony » 23 Mar 2012, 15:14

Hi guys,

I am back after along stint of owner building a house after a sea change and now I am eager to get back into boats.

I had to sell my beloved Caroline to finance the completion of my house unfortunately but have a couple of projects in the shed to ease the pain.
I have a Crackerbox bare hull and need some info from you good folk.

I have all the marine gear including a Clae gearbox that came off a Falcon 170 motor. As these motors are a bit hard to come by now I wondered if I could put the marine gear onto the more common and prevalent Falcon 250 six ( pre crossflow of course). I would have more power as well. Is this a simple swap over or are they different from the manifold maybe?

Any info or advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Tony

Woops! I doubled the post.

G'day Tony, The biggest problem with your 170 falcon marine gear fitting an early 250 engine is that the bellhousing of the 170 is a lot smaller then 221/250 engine, also less mounting bolts.
If your lucky enough that your 170 gear came from an XR then it should fit the 250. Ford used an adaptor plate on the late XP 170 engines so they could fit it to the B.W. transmissions. If you could find one of these adaptor plates you would be ok.
The exhaust manifold should fit ,but you would need to make a new water pump blank off plate, 170 has three monting holes & 250 has four & is larger overall.

Regards
Trevor.

Thanks guys,

Having a motor transported from door to door, state to state, is pretty expensive.I had a quote to get a motor transported from VIC to NSW and because there was no forklifts at either end a special truck with a lifting device on the back had to be used and it was going to cost over $500.Apart from driving there and picking it up are there any other suggestions. The company I got the quote from was e-go.

Cheers,
Tony.

I have a non crossflow ford engine for sale. Not sure if its a 170 or 200. Its had the head modified to take three webbers.
It was set up to run in a hydro.
Its a fresh engine and I have removed the head for inspection. I can reassemble it if you like.
I dont have the webbers.
Im not sure what has been done other than that.
Im in Sydney $1250. dave 0413766501

Dave, A quick way to check whether your engine is a 170 or 200. Look on the block (manifold side) a 170 has three welch plugs & a 200 has five.
With the head removed measure the bore, the 170 is 3 & 1/2 inch, the 200 is 3.68 inch.

Trevor.
