rudder woes

Postby rayza1 » 06 Feb 2012, 21:49

Just a quick update on something i'm playing around with, i'm in the process of removing the shaft from a rudder that was given to me as a replacement for the not so good one on the Worry. After checking that it wasn't pinned i decided to cut the damaged shaft off just above the rudder then drill and tap the remaining shaft and use an 18mmx75mm high tensile bolt and nut which i run down onto a spacer(to allow the shaft to be withdrawn through it while applying the force to the end of the rudder) then while applying heat, wind the nut down (hope this is making sense) Had a 3ft bar on the ring spanner and got to the stage where i could not move it any more. After 5 hours, a grand total of 6mm !! Have about 30mm to go, would hate to think how much force i applied to that shaft. The question is, i gather the're not meant to come out once the're in there. Will keep you updated on whether i win or wind up with something broken. cheers Ray

Ray is this a rudder a bronze and a stainless shaft in it ? If it is you need to talk to Doc. as they are inserted when the bronze is poured.

Im not really sure what you are doing but it sounds real dodgy (maybe post some pics). I dont mean to steal your thunder or put you down but you need to buy a new rudder and not risk your life or the lives of others around you. If the rudder snaps at speed its not going to be pretty. Believe me Ive seen what happens when stuff like this breaks.
The last incident at Yarrawonga is a perfect example:D

Original rudder is pinned, was planning to do the same with this one. Only way anyones getting killed with this one is when the spanner slips !! Have a new weapon....a 20 ton portapower. What does suprise me is that it's not pinned, doesn't have a keyway or any obvious method to stop it falling off other than being bloody tight on the shaft although that may become clearer when the remnants of the shaft are removed. Will keep you updated. cheers Ray

I just reread your post and now Im getting what you are doing. They are cast onto the shaft. More than likely grooves would have been put into the stainless shaft so the bronze runs around and locks it in place. just buy a new one. That one is now stuffed.

I have an inquiring mind, need to know the why and how things are the way they are, if its stuffed it wont get used, from what i can see so far there are no grooves, will more than likely persist with the old rudder anyway

Just a quick update...............I won !! Took 3 ton on a portapower but it finally gave in without a wimper. Shaft end is tapered with 2 holes so i'm guessing the rudder was poured around the shaft, at least now i know. Still have no word when the original rudder will be finished. cheers Ray
