Vanguard marine engine

This was dry sumped. How common was that in the late 40's to early 50's? According to the engine numbers that appears to be about it's age. The oil pump and tank are missing, but as you can see the sump is flat and very small

Looks really good Ray - you have to think there are more of these parts around somewhere - surely they wouldnt make patterns for those then only cast one or two. All sand castings in those days -- and lots of work/ hours in the patterns. They look to be quite good quality too?
I think the dry sump system was reasonably standard in those days from a function point of view - ie use the original pressure pump with an intake pipe that was routed to the dry sump tank via the fuel pump hole in the block - ford / Datsun / toyota all did this with race engine dry sumps. then run a scavange pump off the timing case driven by a key in the end of the camshaft
That would have been a 'high end' system in the day

Dry sumps were used for center of gravity and prop shaft angle. back in the 60's

Thanks for the responses, at this stage i have no concrete plans for the motor...i just didn't want it molested or worse. It may be a project for down the track to maybe set it up as a running display engine. I've done a bit of searching and Nicholls doesn't come up anywhere regarding marine conversions, it most probably is English. In the mean time if anyone finds any information on these conversions i'd love to hear about it. cheers All

By the way Doc, it's a bit of a misconception about Fergie tractors being the same as vanguard. About the only things in common where the engine block and head. The fergies ran 5 ring pistons instead of 3 rings, had different cam grinds and as i have just found out, different water pumps!

One thing you don’t need on your Vanguard that the Ferguson uses Ray, that’s the governor !
