New Boat

Had a major set back on monday with the hull. Against my better judgement I believed the propaganda of using epoxy sealer on the bare timber before applying varnish. I pulled the boat outside to do a couple of progress pics. While it was out I cleaned up my work area to try and reduce the dust.

In the time it sat out in the sun the whole starboard side turned white (blooming). I spent the rest of the day completely paint striping the entire hull back to bare timber. I couldn't take a chance that the rest of the boat wouldn't do the same thing.
To top it off the striper turned the nails and screws all green so I spent all of tuesday with a dremel polishing the heads.

Anyway I now have two coats of varnish on the hull.

It takes around two liTres to do a coat on the hull and most of the inner parts. I need to do ten costs so is going to really go through the stuff.

Its really looking great now.

Ok here it comes
Had some real trouble with these
I uploaded them and they looked like garbage
Did a bit of reading and it turns out Opera does not support embedded colour profiles
Used Safari instead and they looked great
Internet Explorer 8 supports colour profiles as well so if you have that they should look ok
despite the footnote the smaller pics are Daves
Havent looked at them in Windows though as I couldn't be bothered firing up the windows emulator on my Mac

Well done dave the boat looks fantastic you must still have that no sleep problem.

Paul sleep is for the weak.
I go to work in the morning. Come home about 6.
Have dinner wash and get bronte to bed then go back to the shed till late.
I got the gunwales back on last tuesday. It took ask day to put them on.
Just have to sand off the bungs and I can get back into vanishing.

G`day Dave, mate its just amazing the hard work u put into these projects. Its hard to believe. I too would love to come up & check out your work some time when convenient for u.
Inspirational stuff alright, not only restoring one of these boats but owning one & holding onto it.
U see I have been thinking of selling my boat & upsizing to something a bit more comfortable but once again put a stop to that.
I took it out with the wife on Wednesday arvo up to Hungary Beach around from west head & opposite Patonga. Its been a couple of months since we have taken it out. We set up table & chairs on the beach with drinks & nibbles & watched the sun set. We had the whole place to ourselves I suppose because a couple of hours before we had a lovely thunderstorm & everyone had gone for the day.
I had the boat anchored a few metres off the beach ,it was just the most perfect location to admire my work. It sat there on flat calm water, rare for that spot as just around the corner is open sea. U have to pick your day,no swell & no wind. When u get that- magic!
Sorry guys if it seems I have started to ramble on.
But as the sun set & my eyes flashed from my misses to my number 1, (joking) , I knew the love affair was`nt over.
These old timber "clunkers" certainly do have a hold on us, how good is it!
So I`m putting it out there, who else has been romancing the timber?
