Boat Insurance.

Postby Stingray65 » 19 Jan 2024, 16:58

Hi my name is Jim Lange, I'm a new member this financial year. I own 2 clinker timber boats, the insurance is going to expire with SGIC on the 21/1/24. NRMA insurance is taking over SGIC and require a condition report. I found out a marine surveyor, boat broker, boat repairer who are licenced can do a condition report on your boat. I found a boat broker who did the report for $ 90.00 that's in South Australia. I sent the condition report with a photo of the boat to NRMA and we received confirmation the boat is insured upon payment of $ 440.00. Thanks to Alan Price and Dave Brewer. Regards Jim Lange.

Good work Jim, and welcome to the BB, did you end up with a list of people to do the condition report or just the one? Who was it?

No there was no list, you will have to ring around your area we're you live for a boat broker or boat repairer and ask if they are licensed to do a condition report. I've only found this out in the last couple of weeks. I live in streaky bay SA and after some pH calls there is a bloke in town that I didn't know he did the report. You learn something every day. I hope this of help to people who want to insure their boat. Cheers Jim Lange.

Welcome aboard Jim. Nice to see a new member posting on the bulletin board. Your boat is a beauty. Can you put up some history of it's whereabouts when you can? I'd love to see more of it. Thanks for posting.

Hi Woodray, my father Karl Lange was a shipwright in Adelaide. In 1965 Berni Holding got karl to build the 17 foot Stingray, Berni raced the boat at snowdens beach in Adelaide. Karl also built a boat for Barry holding at the same time. Berni only had the boat for a couple of years. Both Brothers Had the contract at the time to build the railway line between Proper Bay, Port Lincoln to Coffin bay for the mineral sands project. Around 1967 the bloke that worked for the Holding Brothers Barry Hillier bought the boat off Bernie at the 1967 Tunarama weekend. In march 1968 Barry Hillier and a group of people did 2 skiing demonstrations for the Adelaide Festival of Arts on the river Torrens with the Stingray. Barry only had the boat for a couple of years, and sold the boat because he was getting married and needed some money. His brother in law Arno De kron bought the boat, Arno used the boat on the Murray River and owned it for 46 years. In 2015 i bought the boat off Arno in that condition as seen on the photos, i did replace the fuel pump,2 blade prop, made the template up for the bow plate and got it cast and chromed. The William Carter 4 Barrel carburetors i had reconditioned. I got a lot of information from Barry Hillier. The Stingray has a 327 dry sump chev corvette engine direct drive. The boat is stored at streaky bay and is used on occasions at show and shines on the trailer. Thats about it Regards Jim Lange.

The double curved timber trim on the transom was Karl's signature. On another day I'll do a write up on where he started building boats in Australia in the 1950s. The 1960s boats were built in Welland Adelaide. Anyway I'm glad people enjoy the write ups so far. Regards Jim Lange.
