Anzani powered mini Hydro

Postby WoodRay » 10 Dec 2022, 19:02

I had an impulse moment at Glenmaggie last week and bought Rays little Hydro. My excuse was that he didn't want to take it home.
Anyway I have managed to sort the ignition problems and now it runs. I have also stripped down the leg and found the drive gear badly corroded and the thrust bearing buggered. Parts are going to be a real challenge with this thing. I'm still thinking about stripping the engine down just incase there are some unseen issues that might do some damage if I run it anymore. I'm actually enjoying the little distraction that it is but I'm mindful of getting the other two boats done.

There would be a good chance of the bearings being still available because the inch series of tapered roller bearings were used in many applications - the individual cup and cone numbers are critical tho because for the same bearing architecture the bore and OD can change by up to 1/8"
The bevel pinion is another issue - assume the bevel gear is in similar condition - to have them built up and remachined or hand re profiled but thats a big job with all those teeth , unless you have a milling m/c with dividing head and the right cutter- good luck

A quick dash today to meet up with Ray to pick up the remaining spares for the Anzani. Have stripped the second leg and it looks like these gears have survived better even though the box was dry also. Just have to source the bearing set and seal tomorrow.
The Anzani may live to fight another day.
Thanks for bringing the bits to Melb Ray.

Bearing set and seal purchased today. I'm getting a little scared now that this thing will be a goer. Lol

Gearbox all done and fitted up. Leak test overnight. Just have to make up a brass shear pin for the prop and fit tomorrow and it's all good.

Thanks Alan. I might be going too early with my post. I'm still in a quandary about the correct cooling water flow direction. It's not what it seems.
