Winter work

Ok, what's everyone up to in their sheds this winter? It's too bloody quiet on here people so post up what your doing.
Both of my boats are in bits so I'll need to pull my finger out before this up coming summer.

Just home from NSW red spot and have to isolate for 14 days so it's time to open the tool box ,we came home through Narranderra the water was very low .

Lockdown eqates to more shed time. ATM I'm having a little break from the Chris Craft while considering and researching the next stages. I've got the paint ordered and waiting for it to arrive, so can paint the bottom. I'm also researching the best way to fix the deck boards to the frame. Some say epoxy, others 3M 5200... some say to glue the edges of the planks where they butt up, others say not to... some say remove the screws some say leave them in. So while I ponder this I'm building a small dining room side table from red gum for a friend. So nice to be doing a job that is flat and square for a change!

While not strictly "boat" work, i'm repairing the roof on my poor old Vanguard after one of the 2 TON straps i was using to secure Lighting 3 to my shed rafters broke causing the boat to come to rest sitting on the roof right on the curvature above the rear window. I tried pulling the two dents out to no avail. I didn't want to remove the headlining because the material is brittle as are the door seals, so the (painful) decision was made to use filler. After getting a fairly good result paint was applied (specially prepaired spray packs).....and two weeks later i;m STILL waiting for it to dry properly.....I have no idea what went wrong. i'm now deliberately staying out of the shed while i ponder my next step. ( i think i know what that will be but i'm avoiding it like covid)

I've been struggling to get enthusiastic with the boats as so much other stuff gets in the way. The weather doesn't help.
I know it'll never get done unless I do it so it will get the better of me. I have been busy buying on evilbay which is not good so I better get out there before I'm broke and cant buy fuel.

Jesus, not good Ray. How much crap did you have stacked in Lightning??? I'd image the old Vanguard steel wasn't going to give up easily. Makes me wonder how heavy that boat is if it Managed to dent it. Don't ponder mate, get in to it. You'll never know unless you have a go as they say.

Hi Craig, it wasn't weight that caused the strap to break. Even though it was a new 2 ton strap when the boat was put there, in 2 years it had managed to deteriorate to the point where you could break it by hand. GRRRRRRRR CHEAP CHINESE CRAP!!!! I will start rubbing the car back as soon as i calm down!!

Ive had similar problems with those Ratchet straps - use a pair to cross brace the camper supports while working inside it just to stop it rocking about a bit. after a few months I went to retention a bit and they basically just fell apart - almost to dust! They were only cheapies and weren't expected to do much and no resultant damage but I wouldn't use em to support anything structurally without some sort of a 'backstop'. I have done in the past with no problems - but these days the quality is such an unknown

I have not got back to the boats yet .
I do intent to get the 6 cyl skiff out soon for a run but need to get it started fist . It's been nearly 2 years since it was wet .
The big one should be ready for a run with the ajustable cav plate.
I'm currently working on the 28 coupe while the hotrod is in the museum.
Need to do brakes on the HK and the motorhome but waiting for the parts .

It’s been too cold in the shed of late to do much, but yesterday was a lot warmer in the booth, even in Ballarat. Alan and I spent yesterday down at the dyne with Nova’s new heart. A really good set of figures and equally great sound. Very nicely done indeed, Mr Price.
