1962 Seacraft

Postby WoodRay » 16 Feb 2014, 10:11

Hi all,
this is my first post after joining this forum due to my recent purchase of a 62 Seacraft.

Originally named Woodray after owner Ray Wood (Either he lived in Poowong or the boat was built there by the Tulls). it Changed hands to some person in Deniliquin and then to Ian Hancock from Bendigo. I was lucky enough to purchase it from him about a month ago.

I'm currently working to get her back into good running order and use her for a season or two so I can get know it and see what really needs doing. Currently the engine is out due to water in the oil and its basically tired. The previous owner is helping out with the current engine rebuild is it failed the day after getting it home! We've spent the last few days cleaning out years of silt and crap in the hull and it seems to have come up well with no major areas of concern so far.
Long term I would like to get some good history on the boat and put her back somewhat close to her original set up. With that I'm chasing some marinising gear for grey motor if anyone can help out. I'm not sure on colour scheme or renaming her either so I'm welcome to any advice there.
Cheers.
Craig.

Is it a sickness Ken?, or an obsession. Looking forward to seeing your work on this one.

Congratulations on the purchase Craig, the seacraft is a lovely boat and yours looks to be a beauty. Sympathy with the water in the oil, it does rather spoil the joy of a new boat but when it is sorted you will have a truly lovely thing.
Ken why am I not surprised, is the new on turn key or project?

Congratulations on your purchase. I do feel for you when you first use your boat and it dies on you - I had the same situation on my boat that I am currently restoring and repowering from a grey motor to a red. I have all the marine gear needed for a grey motor if you are interested. Best of luck with your plans. I remember seeing Woodray in the early 90's and took some photos at a car show in Geelong. HEY KEN COOL!

Thanks Ken, Andy, NPeth & Jim.
Jim, not is all lost with the engine as I'm in the trade and its a bit of a passion for me.
I'm very interested in the Grey Motor marine gear. Can you send me some details of what you have and what your after for them?
Re the photo's I would dearly love to see them and get some copies if your up for that.
Cheers.
Craig.

Just remember if you want to restore it back to original , Seacraft had there own conversion cast up for the grey and the red. having there name on it .
If it was fitted out buy seacraft it would have it on the conversion and no dog clutch.
I would stay with the red even by placing a 149 decal on the rocker cover to keep it some where near right for the boat. but if you do go grey keep the red just in case.

Hi Craig, I would tend to agree with the advice from Ken and screw it about leaving a red motor in as you will have a much more usable boat. I have a 186 in my Seacraft and it is great. If you want to go for a grey motor you would best look for the seacraft castings for originality. The marine gear I have is a bit agricultural. I have put a couple of photos up of your boat in mid 90's. If you want to contact me my number is 0412680303. Jim

Hey Craig , welcom to the fray.
I rescued my TS Seacraft ,Ricshaw, about 7 years ago and have had a ball with it.
Easy boat to maintain and stands up to a fair thrash ,with a lot of members having a go.
I reciently bought a 68 ,140 Bridge Deck ,like yours ,last year sans running gear, unfortunately there
is rot in the bottom which is now being repaired whilst I chase said running gear.
As advised by others in the club I am also an advocate of the red motor and would "stick" with it.
Look forward to meeting up sometime .
Ric...
