Hi Ray.

Re: Pagan
Interesting day today, after not having any luck getting Pagan to run smoothly i decided to start looking elsewhere for faults. Did a compression test that revealed some interesting results, ranging from 150psi to 70psi with 2 and 4 low while 1 and 3 were ok. All cylinders came up a bit when oil was squirted down the bores, test was carried with the rocker gear off so no open valves! Me thinks rings are a problem although i'm open to suggestion. I'm guessing that is a fair bit of why it's so bitchy to get going. Motor was supposed to have been rebuilt. It does have a copper head gasket so that could be some of the problem but i would be looking for adjacent cylinders to be down. Head off tomorrow night for a closer look!
Re: Pagan
Hey Alan, forgot to mention, checked head bolts were tight before compression test. Needed rocker gear off for that, so far not that impressed with anything that has been done to the boat by previous owner. For all i know head may not have been torqued down.

Re: Pagan
I'd be guessing either worn rings, worn out bores or a scored bore.
Maybe burnt valves. Especially when as you have been saying it is difficult to start
Did all the comps come up equally when the oil was squirted in the bores? Could you hear the compression blowing out any where? If it valves the it's most likely to be exhaust valves that are burned. Is it a solid copper head gasket or is it a copper composite? Not likely to be the copper head gasket if it's a copper composite. They are usually pretty good.
Check head bolt tensions if you have a tension wrench. If not sure how to do that I can explain in another post. If you need a tension wrench I have one you could borrow if necessary.
Before you rip the head off I'd also do a leak down test.
Although a compression test is a bit of a leak down test anyway.
But I'd be thinking that it needs another rebuild if it's only got 70 psi in 2 cylinders although if it has a couple of burnt valves then the comp will be blowing through the cracks/burnt areas of the valves.
I think that for the cost of a head gasket I'd just pull the head. Seeing as how the valve train has been removed it probably about a half hour job.

Re: Pagan
Solid copper can give problems if not properly annealed before being installed and tensioned down.
What engine is fitted? I think you had said it was a Vanguard?

Re: Pagan
Ray, you used to be able to buy a ring spanner in the shape of a u.
the bottom had the ring for the nut and the top had a square hole for a drive, it went under the rockers to tension the head bolts .
They were used on old Holden greys.

Re: Pagan
Hi all, pulled the head off tonight. It's not looking too good, bores seem ok...no scoring..no lips. The block between 2 and 3 has what seems to be a piece missing, although i was looking at a picture of someones restoration and it showed the same thing..it just doesn't look right! I will get some expert advice. The valves are interesting at best, no two look the same. My guess would be that the engine has been built from bits. My son works for a high performance engine builder so i will get him to look at the head for me. If the block is stuffed I don't know where you would get one. Will keep you updated
Re: Pagan
Tractor wreckers , plenty around ., they are a wet sleeve motor Ray , that is " removable liners "
If its the hole between the mid bores, thats std
Ross
Ray, look at ebay, item no 321313969553 its a work shop manual for vanguard
