I have been playing with stains myself and I don't like the colour the mahogany stain is, it looks too artificial.
Maybe try mixing the walnut and mahogany stains ie 90% mahogany 10 % walnut and test it on some scrap timber to see how it looks and just keep playing with different ratios until you find what you like then write the mixture down.

Hi Jamie didn't realise up to now that you have been lurking here.

Can I make a suggestion on stains. The pretinted ones are ok but there are other tints available. Feast and Watson make proof tints in solid colours. I was able to get some red which I mixed with other stains to get the colour that I wanted.

They may be a little difficult to obtain but specialty paint store are probably your best bet. I got mine from a smaller mitre 10 store.

I now have the stain sorted out...i tried a water based Cabbott's stain in the walnut and it is perfect...stain gives a lot more depth to the timber rather than a painted on look from the Minwax..

I have routed out the rear top corner of the transom and cut out the filler strip which i wrapped in a towel and poured boiling water over to soften up.. i then clamped it to a timber cut to profile to bend to shape for easier fitting later on..

Got some time over the long weekend to fit and glue the filler strip to the top edge of transom. Timber was a PITA i had to split it down the middle to get it to bend how i wanted, glad that the joints turned out quite neat.

Now for final sand and staining of the cover board and king plank.

I just use wattyl stains from bunnings. I usually mix jarrah with the maple stain.
Even though the tins says for interior use only my boats have stayed looking great for years..I do keep them garaged.
By the way great job.

Not alot of progress but still ticking along.

I have been working on the edge trim (Coving?) around the cockpit edges.

I made a jig up for my trimmer to cut the recess into the corner pieces and made up all the straights bits. Jig worked really well and made them all uniform.

Have been gluing in cover timbers along the inside top edge of cockpits.

I am going to glue all the edge trim and sand (Round over) before I stain.

Hi all,

Spent yesterday cutting and dry fit edge trim around second cockpit, removed clamps and glued in place.
This morning i removed clamps and gave a quick sand. would like to complete the other cockpits today but have to fly to sydney for training for work, so will have to be on the week end.

Very happy with the look of the edge trim.

Bit of an update.

Have completed the install of the edge trim around the seating.

Couple of photos show a bit of bling on the top deck as I am trying to figure out final positioning so I can drill the holes.
