Skiff identification please

Postby Thommo » 17 Jun 2012, 21:22

Gday Fella's

This is a long shot but, you never know.
Does anyone know anything about the little skiff ( I think the boat is called 'Meteor' ) in this picture.
An owners name would be of great help if possable.
It looks to be a very similiar shape to my little skiff.
The picture was taken at Goolwa in the early/mid 70's

I hope that Doc will correct me if I've got this one wrong, but Meteor was raced by Ron Leaney of the VSBC in the 95 cu in class. After Meteor Ron went on the race a white skiff called Piranaha (Simpkin built) with Lotus twin cam and I recall he also had Havoc the hydro before retiring from racing. The yellow skiff in the photo Shiff-T, was raced by Ted Hamilton. I don’t know who built Meteor – I’d guess at Keith Simpkin but really don’t know.

METEOR owner Ron Leaney - Ran a 95 cu in Cortina ford motor -- in a Keith Simpkin hull. Ron had " METEOR" forsale in June 1971.
HAVOC I thought was own by Alan Eddington but could've change hands like most boats, as owners moved up classes.

Wow  I didn't really think anyone would know.
It sounds like I'll have to rule Meteor out as being my boat.
As far as I am aware, mine is not a Simpkin.
If it was, Colin or Dave D would have known that.
Thanks for the replies fellas, much appreciated 8-)

As best I can recall Ron sold Piranha to Tassie then bought Havoc from Alan Eddington which he installed his Lotus Twin Cam. In their day they were an unbeatable and expensive engine. Hard to source too. I don't thuink that Ron raced Havoc all that much before he retired from racing. And I can't ever recall the hydro turning up anywhere after Ron had it. Maybe skiffo might know seeing that he got Couger from Alan's brother, Jack.

Just remember Guys, hulls would be good for one or two race seasons. Owners would change boat builders . What i'm saying 3 or 4 boats out there with the same name with different builders. For example "Venus" and "Mandy" always had a identical sister boat back at the Dorf factory .
