Thunda Babe
Re: Thunda Babe
Good work there Craig. I'm a jig fan... this will speed up the process. One down..... one less to go.
Re: Thunda Babe
Back into it today. Started on shaping the planks and mating the first one to the keel. As you may see from the mounting holes for the skeg, the keel wasn't perfect as the original cut in for the planks was deeper on one side than the other. Also one wasn't all that straight which left a fair gap to the plank edge. This meant a lot of hand planing in specific areas to get it to mate up the full length. It's hard to know where to stop with fixing problem areas. Just have to finish the inside bevel on the curved section at the bow for this plank.
Re: Thunda Babe
Yes, it does your head in when it's not right but you can't change something that works.
Re: Thunda Babe
That's looking very good Craig. Patience and time is your friend with this fit. Just continue to make small changes with the hand plane so that you can creep up to a perfect fit.
Re: Thunda Babe
First plank now done. Looks like I have good contact in the rebate as well as minimal gap against the keel. I think the longest part is working out a quick and effective process to all of these jobs. I stuffed around taking the plank on and off doing the bevel till I realised I could lay the plane side on on the keel and just raise the plank and cut as required in the needed area. It's certainly an art and I'm learning heaps.

Re: Thunda Babe
Still plugging away with shaping the keel planks. It's slow but satisfying work getting the plank curve and bevel angle right.
Re: Thunda Babe
Great to see this step by step Craig
Re: Thunda Babe
Admire your commitment mate. You're getting there, but the garboard is the hardest to fit. I'm sure it get easier & quicker.
Re: Thunda Babe
Maybe I'm being too fussy, who knows? I'm glad I've taken pics along the way since I've owned it.
Re: Thunda Babe
I'm giving this stuff a go as a last ditch effort to get the oil soaked into the keel out.
