15ft 60s clinker

The blokes @ the Rathmines boat shed have acquired this partly constructed 15 ft boat .. built by a recently departed man ... and his wife who sort out potential experts to finish the build ( she is in her 80s) The designer is unknown but the couple of shipwrights @ the shed think it could be a kit ...

Re: 12 foot simpkin skiff

The trailer is interesting - guess it must have worked ok in the day - I did not know the Corolla engines were used in these boats I have an ex race (Sports 1300) 3k corolla engine with the basic set up from the formula 3 cars of the 70s ie bored to 1298 forged pistons, this one has Argo rods and I ...

Re: A Tasmanian experience

If you are going to produce photos of that quality I think its ok to test Gregs patience! - everything about the photos -fantastic - Torea - the location - the water- the background - even the perceived motion ( engine running)- beautiful

Re: 1962 Seacraft

It looks from the pics that there is nowhere enough engagement depth of the gear/pinion. If the engaged tooth does not drive the ring gear far enough the next pinion tooth 'slaps' the top of the next tooth - very noisy and can destroy the gear and pinion Its only a guess from the pics but 1.5mm 'tig...

Re: Skiff Identification Help

It does look like a converted outboard to me as well Possibly an extended version of a Glen L Squirt https://www.boatdesigns.com/10-Squirt-runabout/products/360/ The std Squirt design is 10ft but there are notes on the site where 11ft8 version has been built with a Jet Ski engine unit so 11ft 4 woul...

Re: Bulletin board disaster.

It is up to us. A resource like the forum cannot be substituted by the likes of social media sites The info and experience of the members is so specialised and specific that newbys to the sport like me could not progress at all in any sort of restoration without the forum help. Re: Buster Skiff Restoration

Ok thanks for the advice. I knocked up a dummy shaft and 1/2 key so a static balance now relatively easy. Things are moving but slowly Another question - prop shaft set up - the set up in Buster seems to be a thrust bearing then a rigid flange coupling onto crank nose. Is this normal? I cant see how...

Re: Buster Skiff Restoration

Another question - when you guys static balance a prop do you use a dummy half key or balance the prop and shaft as an assembly
or I was thinking maybe to make a short dummy shaft / key but that might be overkill?

Re: Buster Skiff Restoration

Thanks - this is an old shaft and will go with the BSW thread Ill spin up a couple of Brass castle nuts and washers because if you have a spare it will likely never get used! The prop shaft key was a bit rough so I thought I would replace it - needed to be taller as Im using a sleeve in the prop. Co...

Re: Buster Skiff Restoration

Thanks to the very significant help of a Forum member I have acquired a prop which should be right for the job. Now I have another probably dumb question - the prop shaft has a 5/8 thread 11TPI - being a Morse taper one would assume a BSW thread but could be UNC - same pitch different thread profile...
