Re: Stains and varnish

Thanks for the feedback Rayza, looks like a trip to Bunnings when it is safe to go out. The boat doesn't have any makers marks on it and by the number of holes in the main stringers it has been modified at least once. I bought it off a chap on ebay. It had quite a bit of rot in the hull and the deck...

Stains and varnish

Hi all, I have now reached another stage in resurrecting my boat. The hull is complete and I have started fitting a new deck (marine ply). I want to stain the ply then varnish. My questions for the brains trust are: 1. Water or oil based stain?; 2. Epoxy seal before varnish?; 3. Recommended varnish?...

Re: Paint selection

Hi Guys, Thanks for your prompt and helpful responses. I have just started to prepare the hull in earnest and can see that I have weeks of sanding, filling and caulking in front of me and would hate to make the wrong choice. I think I will go with Norglass Weatherfast Premium Enamel Gloss over Norgl...

Re: Bouyancy and other matters

In relation to bouyancy I received the following from Vicroads: Hello David Thank you for the enquiry. There is no mandated requirement to have buoyancy fitted in order to register a recreational vessel in Victoria, and as it is not a new vessel it is not required to meet the Australian Builders Pla...

Re: Bouyancy and other matters

Thanks for the quick responses, I have only had a chance to check the planking and it all appears to be plywood. The more I dig the more rot I find and that is without turning it over to get a good look at the hull. I have referred my question on buoyancy to Transport Safety Victoria. If it is manda...

Bouyancy and other matters

Hello, I have just purchased an old wooden speedboat and joined the group. It is a 17' rear mount with vee drive that I intend to restore. See photos. My questions for the gurus of the group are; 1. The boat is not currently registered - is it a legal requirement to have positive bouyancy to be regi...
